Inside Admiral

The people behind the promotions: Gemma, Senior Negotiator – Claims

'’I work for an interesting and fun department. There are so many different areas within Claims, it’s been a fantastic opportunity and learning curve for me getting involved with the different areas and understanding how they all work towards a common goal.

‘’I began my Admiral career back in October 2005 in what was then called Teleclaims – an inbound call centre for the Claims department. I then moved over to Liability (dealing mainly with those accidents where our customer might be at fault). This was the best decision I made as in Liability, there were huge opportunities to hone in on my skill set and move higher up the chain. I managed my own caseload of claims, seeing them from start to finish with a lot of responsibility.

‘’I was promoted to Negotiator in February 2015, which gave me more responsibility in terms of the value of claims handled, and from there, in November 2016 I was given the opportunity of acting senior to prepare me for becoming a Senior. I was thrown in the deep end learning on the job, which is how I learn best. People Service (HR) gave me a lot of people advice, which helped in terms of my people management skills. This prepared me immensely for the role and was promoted to Senior in 2017.

‘’As a Senior I manage my own case load but have the extra responsibility of managing a team of seven. I provide a lot of support to the team to help and improve their performance and work life.

‘’I provide a lot of training which can be one on one, or in a group. I really enjoy understanding where improvements within the team can be made, providing the necessary advice, training or support and seeing the end results – It’s very rewarding, I love helping people.

‘’If you like the idea of working for Admiral Claims and working your way up, don’t be afraid to ask for help and always ask why we do things the way we do, which will enable you to gain a better understanding of Claims as a whole. Get your head down and produce great quality work – this will get your name out there.

‘’The Claims department has a great work/life balance - due to the nature of the job, it can be challenging at times, so it’s good to also have that down time away from your desk with the team getting together to have a bit of fun and break. Every member on the team takes it turn to have responsibility for an hour of Wednesday fun which we always look forward to!’’
